After 42 years service in the Salvation Army her superiors want Emily (Thora Hird) to retire. When she expresses her reluctance to do so, she gets transferred to a series of "quiet postings" in Brigthorpe and Blackwick - two quiet, working-class Yorkshire towns that the good captain envisions as Sodom and Gomorrah. Emily and her eager recruit sister and niece Alice (Patsy Rownlands) lay siege on the pubs, strip clubs, and dens of iniquity - not to mention the Anglicans, Methodists and other competitors - to try to bring eccentric small town sinners to salvation.
